About Us

Welcome to Somerhill Kids Education Initiative (SKEI). Located in the heart of Wakiso, Central Region, Uganda, we are a dedicated community-driven organization committed to rewriting the futures of vulnerable children and families. What began as a humble childcare and education project was officially re-imagined and re-named in 2022 as SKEI, expanding our vision to create lasting, generational transformation.

Our journey is fueled by a profound belief that every child deserves a safe space to learn, and every family deserves the dignity of self-reliance. To date, SKEI has proudly reached 347 children and 147 families, providing them with the tools, love, and education necessary to break the cycle of poverty. Among them, we have rescued 56 children from the surrounding slums and suburban areas of Kampala and Wakiso, bringing them out of extreme hardship and into a environment of hope, restoration, and academic promise.

A Message from the Founder & Director

Dear Friends and Partners,

When we first opened our doors as a modest childcare project, our mission was simple: to provide a safe haven for children who had nowhere else to turn. But as I looked into the eyes of the children in our community, and witnessed the crushing weight of poverty borne by their mothers and fathers, I realized that providing a classroom was only the first step. True restoration requires healing the whole community.

In 2022, we breathed new life into our mission by establishing the Somerhill Kids Education Initiative (SKEI). Every day in Wakiso, we witness the incredible resilience of children rescued from the toughest circumstances. Seeing 56 young souls move from the vulnerability of the streets and slums into the warmth of our care is a testament to what love and opportunity can achieve. Yet, our hearts remain heavy for the many who are still waiting for a lifeline.

We believe that you cannot uplift a child without empowering the hands that hold them. This is why we walk side-by-side with parents, equipping them with vocational dignity so they can sustain their households. Our work is emotional, urgent, and deeply personal. We invite you to join hands with us—whether as a donor, volunteer, or advocate—to help us reach the next child, restore the next family, and build a brighter Uganda together.

With gratitude and hope,

Founder & Director

Our Core Programs

• Child Rescue & Rehabilitation: We actively reach into the slums and suburbs of Kampala and Wakiso to rescue children facing extreme vulnerability, offering them safety, psychosocial support, and a pathway back to childhood.

• Formal Education & Literacy: We provide comprehensive primary education and literacy programs, ensuring that financial barriers never stand in the way of a child's intellectual development.

• Family Economic Empowerment: We break generational poverty by teaching parents and guardians vital vocational skills, including hairdressing, tailoring, bookbinding, and soap making, alongside functional adult literacy.

Guiding Principles

Mission

To rescue, educate, and holistically empower vulnerable children and their families in Uganda by providing quality education, vital life skills, and sustainable vocational pathways to dignity and self-reliance.

Vision

A society where every vulnerable child is rescued, educated, and nurtured within a self-sustaining family to reach their full potential.

Objectives

• To expand access to quality education and literacy for at least 500 vulnerable children across the Wakiso and Kampala regions over the next three years.

• To rescue and rehabilitate additional children from slum areas, providing them with safe shelter, nutrition, and emotional healing.

• To equip 200 more families with practical vocational skills in tailoring, hairdressing, soap making, and bookbinding to ensure household economic stability.

• To foster community resilience by bridging the gap between child education and adult literacy, creating a holistic environment for family advancement.
